Handicap Series

 15th April 2019

The 2019 Handicap Series starts this Wednesday. It’s not supposed to be too serious, but a great way to challenge yourself and hopefully see some improving times over the summer. The format also gives everyone a chance of winning, by allocating handicap times based on everyone’s expected 5 mile time, although it does favour the slower runners as they can progress more than the faster ones. The slowest runner goes off first, then everyone else follows at intervals according to their handicap time. If everyone runs to form then everyone should finish together. In practice that never happens, as some have good runs and some not so good runs. However, it also relies on everyone being honest and realistic about their anticipated pace – if your handicap time is too generous then you will beat it easily, but if it is too tough then you might not get near it. Below are the expected times based mostly around last year’s series times. Please take a look and see if your expected time looks about right. Anyone beating their expected time by too big a margin (indicating their handicap was far too generous) will be deducted points to try and even things out (especially anyone asking for slower times then beating them by a big margin 😊). Handicap times are adjusted after each race.

So, please check the below and advise me ASAP (by Wednesday lunchtime at the latest) if their time needs adjusting. Apologies if your name is not on the list, it’s not deliberate; it’s just based on who ran last year as I haven’t had time to check through our membership list to add any newer runners. You are of course very welcome, so just let me know you hope to come along and let me know your expected 5 mile time. As it’s unlikely you will have done a 5 mile, if you’ve done a recent 5k or 10k then let me know that time and I can adjust. If you haven’t raced recently just try and estimate your time as best you can.

As mentioned in my email last night, it’s best to park at Morrison’s (ideal for pre/post run shopping) if you are driving as it’s just a short walk across to Walton Cardiff Lane.

Nigel has volunteered to help on Wednesday to hand out race numbers and record finishing times, but it would be useful to have one more helper. So if anyone is carrying an injury or just doesn’t fancy running it this month but can help out, let me know.

We had a really good series last year with high numbers taking part, so hoping to see lots of you running this year too.
