Jackson 5 Star

Michael Jackson has finally been presented with his ‘Improver of the Year’ award. A fabulous achievement for Jacko and the award caps a fine 2015 in which we saw him go from strength to strength; though he did suffer the odd niggle, his determination and focus to reach his fitness goals proved popular in the running club. From a guy who may have struggled to run for a bus to an athlete chasing 90 minute half marathons, Jacko is a shining example of what can be done with planning, commitment and honest training. This year’s Naunton Nearly 19 once again excited a few from Tewkesbury; regulars Nigel Tillott, Jay Russell and Charlotte Deacon were joined by Stuart Bird for his first ‘testing’ off-road event. Conditions were wet underfoot after some heavy storms however, the ambient temperature was on the warm side of cold.

Nigel came home with the best result finishing in 2 hrs 35mins as first MV50. Stuart timed 2:50 and enjoyed the experience – Stuart has started training for the Manchester Marathon.

Jay finished in 3:12 and reported a clean bill of health – Jay had knee issues last year. Charlotte, who gave Michael Jackson some competition as IotY, completed the event in good shape too recording 3:28 hr. Anyone thinking of running this event in the future – which is recommended, needs to enter as soon as entries are being taken as it does reach entry capacity quickly.

Phillip Howells is in the news again – this time ‘Britain’s most active pensioner’ was taking in his 50th Parkrun at Newent. Hardly prolific by Parkrun standards but we must remember that Phillip lost the best part of a year with a back operation so a fine achievement in the shorter space of time. Parkruns are an excellent rehab route for those with post-op, fitness and confidence goals. Well done Phillip.
